Everything We Know About Riot’s League of Legends MMO

Everything We Know About Riot’s League of Legends MMO

Riot Games, the developers behind the incredibly popular League of Legends, have been teasing a new MMO for some time now. The title was first announced in 2019 by Riot founder Mark Merrill.

Although details are sparse, we’ve managed to gather everything we know about the game so far. Keep reading to find out more!

The game is set in the world of Runeterra, the same place where League of Legends takes place.

The World of Runeterra already has deep and rich lore.

There is no release date for the game yet, but it has already been in development for a few years. There is also no word yet on what the official title will be, and it is still only referred to as the Riot MMO.

The project is led by Executive Producer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street, who has previously worked as the Lead Systems Designer for World of Warcraft.

Information about the title has been sparse, but earlier this year we learned that most of the world-building had already been completed for the MMO, a process that had been assisted in the creation of the collectible card game, Legends of Runeterra, and of course League of Legends, as well as Riot’s other titles, books, and the Arcane Netflix Show.

Legends of Runeterra has had an important role in shaping the Riot MMO.

Legends of Runeterra has actually been an important piece in fleshing out the setting for the MMO, and several of the developers that worked on the CCG has now been moved over to the MMO team.

Aspects of the game that is complete or nearing completion include the map and areas of the game, a general storyline, the races, and the creatures that inhabit the world of Runeterra.

As far as the timeline is concerned, Ghostcrawler has mentioned in earlier tweets that the game will be set in present-day Runeterra, although they debated setting it in the past but decided against it as they thought players would appreciate being able to meet all the different Champions that are alive in present-day.

Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the lead quest designer for games such as The Witcher and Cyperpunk 2077 has been hired by Riot to help the game come to life, and hopefully deliver more enjoyable questlines than the standard Kill five boars.

Another important figure in bringing the Riot MMO to life is Anthony Reynolds, the Principal Writer at Riot Games and the man who has written a huge part of the lore for all the Riot Games and the Runeterra setting. Reynolds has also done a lot of writing for the Warhammer setting at Games Workshop, and has written novels for both Riot and Games Workshop, amongst them the League of Legends novel titled Ruination. An important part of League lore.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the game will be moving away from traditional tab-target MMO combat, and instead go for a more action-oriented style of combat, as Riot games are known for more fluid combat than is common in the MMO space.

The game will however most likely be implementing the holy trinity when it comes to class designs, having classes that focus on either tanking, healing, or DPS.

Other features that have been confirmed to be part of the MMO are PvP, dungeons & raids, transmog, although not many details about any of these features have been released yet.
