sGameforge today announced the forthcoming shutdown of Swords of Legends Online (SOLO). The MMORPG is set to cease operations on June 30, 2023, following months of discussion between Gameforge and the game’s developer, Wangyuan Shengtang Entertainment.
The decision, described as “mutual,” was taken in light of the current MMO landscape, and after an exhaustive exploration of potential alternatives. Despite efforts to boost the game’s standing – including a 2.0 update, shifting to a free-to-play model, and releasing further content patches – player numbers have not been robust enough to ensure the survival of the game.
Effective immediately, Gameforge has deactivated payments for SOLO. Players can continue to spend any previously purchased currency in the Crimson Coin Shop. Starting June 1st, at 2:00 PM CEST, discounts of 90% will be available on several categories, including Outfits, Hairstyles, Weapons, Festive Clothing, Footsteps, Accessories, Mount, and Residence.
The SOLO team expressed their gratitude to the players and the Gameforge staff for their support, saying, “It was our pleasure to fight by your side, exploring the fascinating world of Shenzhou, and making new friends along the way.”
In the FAQ, Gameforge clarified that player accounts or currency migration will not be possible due to substantial differences between Gameforge and Wangyuan Shengtang Entertainment’s game versions, along with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Players will still be able to use their Gameforge accounts to access other titles such as AION or Metin2 even after SOLO’s shutdown. The fate of the Swords of Legends Online forums and social media channels is still under discussion.
The company acknowledged that the news might come as a surprise to some, citing ongoing negotiations with developers in search of viable alternatives as the reason behind the late announcement.
