Camelot Unchained is an upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in a historically-inspired fantasy world. Fans of the classic MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot will find the game and setting familiar, as Camelot Unchained is an unofficial spiritual successor.
The game is being developed by City State Entertainment, a small independent game studio founded by Mark Jacobs, the co-founder of Mythic Entertainment and the creator of Dark Age of Camelot.
Camelot Unchained has been in development for over 10 years, as it was first announced in December of 2012. Many fans have criticized the game’s development progress, as Camelot Unchained is still in the early Beta stage.
The Camelot Unchained website is updated every few months with development updates, but so far, it has very little to show for when taking in the time and money spent on Camelot Unchained.
Back in November of 2022, City State Entertainment secured its biggest round of funding yet for the game, adding $15M in new capital from new and original investors. The money would be spent hiring talent for the game and its engine.
The Game
Dark Age of Camelot was one of the few PvP-focuses MMOs that managed to have a somewhat successful life, at least for a while, and Camelot Unchained looks to build on that success as a spiritual successor.
The setting and gameplay look similar to Dark Age of Camelot, with Camelot Unchained being set in a fantasy setting inspired by Arthurian and Celtic legend along with Viking mythology.
Players will be able to create characters and choose from one of three realms: Arthurians, Tuatha De Danann, and Vikings. Each realm has its own style of play and unique look.
One of the key features of Camelot Unchained is its focus on player-versus-player (PvP) combat, or RvR (Realm Vs. Realm). The three realms are at war with each other, and players will be able to choose which realm they want to join and fight alongside.
Realm Vs. Realm was also the key aspect of Dark Age of Camelot, and it was the feature that made it stand out from other classic MMOs of its time, but whereas DAoC brought together hundreds of players fighting for glory on the battlefield, Camelot Unchained aims to support thousands of players in its epic realm vs. realm battles.
Players will also be able to build and defend their own castle, crafting items and building structures while they defend their stronghold from other players. Camelot Unchained utilizes a unique “C.U.B.E” system for building, allowing players to build complex structures.
The game will also have a player-driven economy, with players able to craft and trade items with each other.
Camelot Unchained is being developed using the Unchained Engine, developed in-house by City State Entertainment specifically for this game.
The engine is designed to handle large-scale battles and dynamic environments.
Release Date
There is currently no official release date for Camelot Unchained. The game has been in early beta for almost five years, with no end in sight.
The game’s development has been staggered and unpredictable, with the developers setting no clear timeline for Camelot Unchained’s eventual release.
Many fans are now calling the title vaporware, as it has been in development for over 10 years and still doesn’t have a release date.
Despite the delays, Camelot Unchained continues to receive updates from City State Entertainment every few months, giving fans hope that the game will eventually see the light of day.
Regardless of when Camelot Unchained is released, it will hopefully be a unique experience for MMO players and fans of Camelot alike.
