New Arcanist Class Conjures Magic and Mystery in Elder Scrolls Online’s Necrom Update

Bethesda Softworks shared a sneak peek into the all-new Arcanist class for its widely acclaimed game, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO). As part of the upcoming Necrom: Shadow Over Morrowind update, the Arcanist is the first new class introduced since the Elsweyr Chapter in 2019.

The Arcanist class incorporates three unique skill lines – Curative Runeforms, Herald of the Tome, and Soldier of Apocrypha. Besides, it presents a new combat mechanic, the Crux System, that brings an added layer of depth and intrigue to ESO’s rich gameplay.

“The Arcanist had to be different and not just a new coat of paint or a collection of ‘best hits’ from the game’s other classes,” said Brian Wheeler, ESO’s Lead Combat Designer. This attention to uniqueness extends to the aesthetic aspects, immersing players into a reality inspired by Apocrypha, the realm of the Daedric Prince Hermaeus Mora.

One of the critical goals in creating the Arcanist was to make the class appeal to both new and experienced players. According to Stephen Cerretani, an Arcanist Combat Designer, the class explores new concepts while offering long-time players familiar and comparable abilities.

In line with the Arcanist’s thematic background, the class’s aesthetic elements, including sounds and FX, diverge significantly from other classes. From tentacles to eldritch runes of power, the Arcanist is deeply rooted in the Lovecraftian appeal of Hermaeus Mora and Apocrypha.

The Crux System is another highlight of the Arcanist class. Certain abilities will generate Crux, a new resource that can be used to activate Crux-spending abilities. These abilities benefit from additional advantages like reduced resource costs and enhanced damage.

“Similar to the Necromancer’s corpse mechanic, with an Arcanist, you can enhance your abilities via the Crux system,” explains Wheeler. The system provides the Arcanist the ability to adapt in real-time, adding an intriguing layer of mastery to the gameplay.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom update, featuring the Arcanist class, is set to launch for PC/Mac on June 5, 2023, and Xbox and PlayStation consoles on June 20, 2023. Aspiring players can pre-purchase Necrom now to enjoy unique bonus rewards at launch and immediate access to the Sadrith Mora Spore Steed mount.
